Coach Amy Bryant was recently featured on Robbie’s Hope’s Hope Full Conversations podcast, where she shared insights from her 23 years in college coaching and her upcoming book Let Them Play. In the episode, she reflected on the evolving landscape of college athletics—particularly the growing presence of women in leadership—and spoke candidly about the pressures and rewards of coaching at every level. Drawing from her own journey as a coach and parent of two student-athletes, Coach Bryant emphasized the importance of perspective, and balance—for athletes, parents, and coaches alike.
As the conversation turned to Let Them Play, Coach Bryant discussed the book’s central message: that youth sports should be about fun, confidence, and growth—not pressure or perfection. She shared practical guidance for parents on how to support their children through the ups and downs of competition, the transition to high school athletics, and even the college recruiting process. “Parents are cheerleaders, not coaches,” she explained, encouraging them to focus on the joy of watching their children play rather than the outcomes of games or matches.
Coach Bryant also spoke about the mental side of sports, both for athletes and for coaches. She noted that while conversations around student-athlete mental health have grown, support for coaches is still lacking—and that extending grace to coaches is one of the best ways to strengthen the entire athletic community. “Coaches are human, too,” she reminded listeners. “If we take care of our coaches, they’ll take even better care of our student-athletes.” The full episode is available on Robbie’s Hope’s Hope Full Conversations podcast, and Let Them Play can be found here or on Kindle by Amazon.
